Nebrass Hedhili was beaten repeatedly by the police, who left him almost unconscious on the side of the road outside the city.
(RSF/IFEX) – RSF has learned that Nebrass Hedhili, a correspondent with Radio Kalima, was attacked by undercover police officers on 30 December 2010 in downtown Chebba (67 km north of Sfax). The journalist was getting ready to cover a gathering organised by the Taleb Chebbi Association.
After beating Hedhili repeatedly, an attack that left him half-conscious the police arrested him and subsequently left him on the side of the road outside the city. He was transferred to the Chebba hospital, where he was admitted in intensive care. According to information received by RSF, his current condition does not allow him for be transferred to the Mahdia hospital.
A day earlier, on 29 December, Hedhili had covered a trade union protest in Tunis and barely eluded the police.
In a separate development, Ammar Amroussia, a journalist with http://www.albadil.org , who was arrested on 29 December 2010 in Gafsa, remains missing. Mouldi Zouabi, a correspondent with Radio Kalima in Jendouba, was however released on 30 December 2010 after spending 24 hours in detention.
RSF denounces the censorship aimed at blocking the circulation on the Internet of images depicting the vast protest movement that has shook Tunisia since 18 December 2010.
